Self-defacing, Digital color pencil. 20 x 16

@chensan_art | Asian women in particular are socialized to meticulously manage our expressions to be approachable, craft our appearances to be desirable, and dampen our emotions to be palatable. Through growth into my queer identity, I’m slowly learning to listen to my body and move through and show up in the world following my intuition, instead of the frameworks I’ve constructed for myself. This self-portrait explores extreme facial reactions to feel the physicality of taking of space in an intentionally grotesque way, making visible the ache we hold bodies under patriarchy, capitalism, and white supremacy.
