@jguzmanstudio.art | Each piece in my application consists if ideals of unity, balance, and peace with nature. My work in Papel Picado is a Mexican folk art that can be traced back to indigenous practices in paper making and cutting which survived Spanish colonialism.
La Ascensión | A self portrait of my work in Papel Picado carrying on this tradition and cultivating craft. A self portrait reflecting on my journey as I cultivatemy craft. I specialize in Papel Picado; the Mexican folkart of paper cutting. This craft can be traced back toindigenous practices during the Mesoamerican era.In this piece I wanted to illustrate themes of growth,unity, and peace. I chose the Agave plant to representthese themes because of its perseverance as it reachesfor the sky and ascends step by step to bloom. The focalpoint of the piece is the symbol at the top of the stem,a flaming flower in the shape of a hand. I created thissymbol to represent the tradition of paper cutting andits perseverance despite persecution during the SpanishConquest. Many traditions were purged and books wereburned during this time, but the indigenous peoplewere able to preserve this craft. Their endeavors arewhat inspire me to uphold and reclaim Papel Picado.
With El Mundo I show the face and shape of theworld. I present both the individual person andthe collective people we are. I think about how weare all connected to this planet’s well being and Iwonder what we are without it. I raise the questionof how aware we are of our effect on the world.
